This large bowl is filled with plain white rice and topped with a garnish of meat, vegetables, and/or fish simmered together in a sauce usually made from soy sauce and mirin, then dashi. However, sauce can vary depending on the region and season.

Ingredients are often cooked with beaten eggs and thinly sliced onions. Most common toppings are strips of simmered beef, glazed eel, pork cutlets or slices of breaded pork loin known as tonkatsu...

Poke bowl is a traditional Hawaiian dish whose origins date back to the first Polynesian settlers of the islands. The word “poke” means “to slice” or “to cut” in Hawaiian, referring to the way fish is prepared. Originally, poke was made with freshly caught fish, cut into cubes and seasoned with local ingredients such as sea salt, seaweed, and kukui nuts.

Modern form of poke was heavily influenced by Japanese cuisine in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when a large number of Japanese immigrants arrived in Hawaii to work on sugar plantations.

These immigrants brought their culinary traditions with them, which blended with local Hawaiian cuisine to create new flavors and techniques that are now an integral part of the poke we know today.

The modern poke bowl became popular in the US around 2010 thanks to the use of sushi-grade fish, soy sauce, and wasabi, which are now common ingredients. Japanese introduced several key ingredients and techniques to Hawaiian cuisine, many of which have become staples of modern poke bowls: soy sauce, sesame oil, spring onions, ginger and rice, ponzu sauce, wasabi, furikake, marinated vegetables, and more.

This set of two bowls and chopsticks allows you to serve and enjoy these two iconic dishes.
