This unique mortar is manufactured by MOTOSHIGE, a small potter specialized in the manufacture of mortars and rashes since 1925. Based in the Iwami area within the Shimane prefecture, West Japan, MOTOSHIGE Perpetuates the crafts of the historic Iwami-yaki pottery of the region, to the rustic aspect. The raw material, the clay of Iwami, is renowned for its excellent durability. This set Pilon and mortar is composed of a Katakuchi survachi mortar and his pestlee surikogi.
Suribachi and its surikogi are a traditional Japanese mortar. You can use them to grind sesame seeds, nuts and spices (peppers, bays). You can even grind and mix the ingredients in the mortar to create raw sauces (guacamole, pesto ...). The grinding grooves inside the mortar are hand-shaped and are then vitrified, which avoids the persistence of odors and facilitates cleaning. The underside of the mortar is covered with a silicone base to avoid slipping during use. Very aesthetic, you can even use this mortar as a serving dish for your cold sauces. The spout, called Katakuchi in Japanese, facilitates the payment of content. This mortar comes with a Surikogi (pestle) made from wood harvested in an ecological and durable way.
We recommend our bamboo scraper Fine tooth to help you make the most of your mortar without waste.
