Sakazuki flat sake cup

The cups used to drink the saké are usually small cylindrical containers called O-choko or Choko or Sakazuki of flatter shapes like wide opening bowls.

The smaller the cup, the more you can serve often, showing your honor and your reverence each time the glasses are empty. This is the main reason why traditional Sake cups are so small, to allow this ritual to take place as much as possible during consumption with friends.

When you pour the saké into your mouth, it flows gently on your tongue and spreads on the back and both ends of your tongue, thus resupping the taste of the entire saké.
