    11. Right of withdrawal

    Pursuant to Article L.221-18 of the French Consumer Code, the Buyer has a period of fourteen (14) days to exercise their right of withdrawal from a distance contract, following telephone canvassing or off-premises selling, without having to give reasons for their decision or incur costs other than those provided for in Articles L. 221-23 to L. 221-25.

    The period mentioned in the first paragraph runs from the day following:
    - either the conclusion of the contract, for service contracts and those mentioned in Article L. 221-4,
    - or the receipt of the goods by the consumer or a third party, other than the carrier, designated by them, for contracts for the sale of goods.
    For contracts concluded off-premises, the consumer may exercise their right of withdrawal from the conclusion of the contract.
    In the case of an order covering several goods delivered separately or in the case of an order for a good made up of lots or multiple pieces whose delivery is staggered over a defined period, the period runs from receipt of the last good or lot or the last piece.
    When the FOURTEEN (14) day period expires on a Sunday, or a public holiday or non-working day, it is extended until the next working day.
    The right of withdrawal may be exercised by the Buyer, only if they hold the status of Consumer, without having to give reasons or pay penalties, with the exception of return shipping costs which are not reimbursed.
    The Withdrawal Form can be downloaded by clicking HERE.
    Products must imperatively be returned to SASU PALMIFRANCE in perfect resale condition, in their original condition (packaging, accessories, instructions, etc.), properly sealed, and accompanied by the signed return slip in accordance with the procedure described in the article above. In accordance with the provisions of Article L.221-23 of the French Consumer Code, the Buyer is liable for any depreciation of the Products resulting from handling other than that necessary to establish the nature, characteristics, and proper functioning.

    Excluded from the right of withdrawal are sales of products referred to in Article L221-28 of the French Consumer Code, and notably contracts for:
    "- 4° The supply of goods likely to deteriorate or expire rapidly;
    - 5° The supply of goods that have been unsealed by the consumer after delivery and cannot be returned for reasons of hygiene or health protection;
    - […]
    - 7° The supply of alcoholic beverages whose delivery is deferred beyond thirty days and whose value agreed upon conclusion of the contract depends on fluctuations in the market beyond the professional's control; »

    For the purposes of these terms, products whose minimum durability date expires within thirty (30) days—a timeframe incompatible with exercising the right of return and resale by the Seller—are considered to deteriorate or expire rapidly. In the event that the Buyer exercises a right of withdrawal, the Seller shall refund all sums paid, including delivery costs, as provided for by Article L.221-24 of the French Consumer Code, once the returned products have been received or the Buyer has provided proof of dispatch.

    Description

    In 1948, Shiki Komatsu opened a Nanbu sembei shop with just 21 baking moulds. Although Nanbu sembei now comes in many flavours, sesame sembei was the most popular at the time.
    Nanbu sembei crackers have a simple yet surprisingly nostalgic wheat and sesame flavour. They evoke the warmth of the crackers our grandmothers made by the fireside.
    Nanbu sembei crackers in sesame, peanut and soy sauce flavours preserve the taste of days gone by. A signature product of Komatsu Seika, they are part of its “Grandma Series” range.
    For impoverished farmers, sembei made from buckwheat or wheat and cooked over an open hearth or stove were an essential source of food. Even in difficult times, when sweets had all but disappeared, wheat and sesame could still be found somewhere, easing fears of an ingredient shortage. Sembei also play an important role in religious ceremonies and celebrations. At weddings, it was once customary to put mashed red beans on sembei before handing them out to neighbours. The tradition was somewhat like serving modern-day canapés as appetisers. Likewise, it was customary to give sembei as a gift when visiting someone after the birth of a child.

    KOMATSU SEIKA

    KOMATSU SEIKA – IWATEYA
    It all began with Mrs Shiki Komatsu, the company’s founder, who learned the art of making wheat crackers at the age of 12, after serving an apprenticeship in a small town in Aomori Prefecture, neighbouring Iwate Prefecture.
    After returning from her apprenticeship, she initially sold vegetables door to door, but her heart was set on sembei. In 1948, she managed to acquire 21 handmade moulds and thereafter devoted her life to perfecting the art of nanbu sembei.
    Over the years, Shiki faced many challenges, but thanks to unwavering support and the many precious ties forged within the community, she was able to continue making nanbu sembei.
    There are several legends about the origin of nanbu sembei, but the best known dates back around 600 years, during the Kentoku era (1370–1372). It is said that the vassals of Emperor Chokei made the first nanbu sembei from buckwheat flour supplied by local farmers, shaped them into rounds, sprinkled them with sesame seeds, and then offered them to the emperor.
    Around 450 years ago, the Nanbu clan and its samurai used nanbu sembei as field rations because of their long shelf life. Unlike traditional rice crackers, nanbu sembei are made from wheat flour, poured into a circular mould, then baked until hard. They are characterised by a thin, crisp edge called “mimi”, or “ears” in Japanese.
    Practical, they kept for a long time and their ingredients were easy to find. Moreover, for poor farmers who could not afford to buy white rice, sembei made from buckwheat or wheat flour and baked in a stove were an essential staple food. Even in the aftermath of the war, when confectionery had almost completely disappeared, wheat and sesame seeds could still be obtained, and sourcing ingredients posed little problem. (Excerpt from “Musunde Hiraite” by Shiki Komatsu)
    Although renowned for their long shelf life, the flavour of nanbu sembei can deteriorate over time due to oxidation. This is why nanbu sembei are generally sold in simple packs containing 10 to 20 pieces, and remain a much-loved, versatile food in the regions once controlled by the Nanbu clan.

    The famous manga artist Hiroshi Oba created a design for the product packaging inspired by Grandma Shiki. This design was used in television and print advertisements, becoming a symbol of her brand.
    The Komatsu Seika factory is located on a hill overlooking the Mabuchi River, a fertile river that symbolises the city of Ninohe.
    This was where an apple orchard, dear to the company’s first president, was planted. In spring, the orchard was covered in beautiful white blossoms and, in autumn, it was full of delicious fruit, to everyone’s delight. At the heart of the orchard stood a cherry tree of which the company’s founders were very proud.
    They hesitated to cut it down and, even after it was felled, they installed it in a shrine within the factory. It now watches over the safety of the employees and the development of the company.
    Komatsu Seika specialises in the manufacture of food products. Its current success is due to the loyalty of its customers, the quality of its raw materials and the dedication of its employees. They are also grateful for the blessings of nature found in every rice cracker they produce. They are deeply thankful for them and will continue striving to offer ever better products, never forgetting the warmth and passion of their grandmothers.
    Sembei are also an essential part of life in the Nanbu region. They are frequently found at Buddhist ceremonies and celebrations. Indeed, at weddings, it was customary to place red bean rice balls on sembei and distribute them to neighbours. It is somewhat equivalent to the canapés served as appetisers today. Since they are Nanbu sembei, perhaps they are called “inakappe”? It was also customary to bring cooked gluten and sembei as a gift when visiting a new mother. With a few extra eggs, it was the finest gift to celebrate a birth. It may have been a difficult time, but I have a deep feeling that life was warm. When there was no red bean paste, sugar or confectionery, sembei, with just a touch of sesame seeds, were a real treat. (Excerpt from “Musunde Hiraite” by Shiki Komatsu)
    The origin of thick baked crackers: Mamegoro.
    Nanbu sembei were traditionally enjoyed for their simple flavour of wheat, sesame and a hint of salt, recalling the comforting taste of rice crackers baked by grandmother. In its early days, Komatsu Seika’s range of nanbu senbei consisted mainly of sesame and peanut varieties. However, in 1969, Mamegoro, a thick, sweet and fragrant rice cracker made with butter, sugar and eggs, made its appearance. With its slightly Western-style texture, similar to a biscuit or shortbread, its crispness and melt-in-the-mouth texture, as well as the pleasant chew typical of thick crackers, Mamegoro became a popular product, even giving rise to its own character and television advertisements.
