Description

Founded in 2012 by Shigeki Kihara, Mongaku Valley Winery is a family estate located in the hills above Yoichi, at approximately 130 metres above sea level and 5 km from Ishikari Bay. Its 2.2-hectare vineyard cultivates seven grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinotage, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot White and Gewurztraminer.

The 2022 vintage was marked by a late snowmelt, an early flowering and a gradual ripening of the grapes, resulting in a harvest of good quality and good yield.

The "Mongaku Valley" blended cuvée, originating from the Yoichi terroir, is a dry wine crafted through the co-fermentation of several grape varieties. It stands out for its fresh and expansive acidity, a light tannic structure contributed by the red grapes, and great drinkability. Its complex aromatic profile reveals notes of apricot, mirabelle plum, yellow plum, citrus, honey, stewed pear, lychee, walnut, herbs, wood and smoke.

On the palate, the wine combines finesse, depth and umami, with nuances evoking dashi, a subtle bitterness, spiced touches, a light saltiness and a beautiful freshness. This complexity makes it an ideal partner for flavour-rich cuisines combining broths, herbs and spices.
