Katsuyama Sake
Date Masamune was a lover of art and fine food, a gourmet and connoisseur, and particularly fond of fermented rice wines commonly known as sakés. In order to guarantee his permanent supply of sakés, our Lord in question appointed six financially well-established (prosperous) families, tasked with creating genuine saké breweries and producing premium sakés. To do so, the families had to purchase the finest rice on his behalf — at great expense. The proceeds from this rice trade also allowed him, above all, to maintain his armies. At his request, the Isawa family thus founded the Katsuyama house and began crafting artisanal sakés: the Gozenchu. Three and a half centuries have since passed, and of the 6 chosen families, only the Isawa family — owner and operator of the KATSUYAMA brand — has survived in the premium segment and continues to thrive brilliantly, now led by the twelfth generation in the person of Jihei Isawa. It is worth noting that the Date family still exists today, and its current 34th generation continues to be supplied by the Isawa family! The range we offer comprises 6 nihonshu, including 4 Gozenshu whose tasting will greatly surprise you (their consumption was, in the past, reserved exclusively for Lords). These Gozenshu are extraordinary, surprising, bewildering, rare, and will not leave you indifferent. One thing is certain: after savouring these nectars of the Lords, it will be very difficult for you to enjoy all other sakés or nihonshu on the market in quite the same way.
