NIKKO – The company's name is synonymous with fine ceramics and quality.
The reputation of Kanazawa (Ishikawa Prefecture) in the field of traditional arts is intimately linked to the political and cultural context of the region. Delving back into the history of the city thus allows us to understand the richness of its masterpieces. Kanazawa, capital of Ishikawa Prefecture, has long held a strategic role in the organisation of the country. This political leadership explains the development of the arts and crafts in Kanazawa.
The old town bears witness to a traditional expertise in the fields of arts and crafts and feudal architecture.
Worth noting and adding to your "to do list" if you are lucky enough to travel: the famous 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, located opposite the Kenroku-en garden, and the city's castle. Today, Kanazawa has been twinned with Nancy, a renowned hub of Art Nouveau, since 1973.
Kanazawa, a UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art, welcomed Japan Ironstone Inc. From 1908. The company was initially specialised in cast iron ceramics, before NIKKO expanded and diversified its production.
The production hub, considered a leader in the fine porcelain market, is recognised for the quality of its products. Its reputation is worldwide.
NIKKO produces tableware for retail shops, as well as for the leading hotels and restaurants around the world.
A porcelain factory is founded in Hakusan, Ishikawa; another in Gyoda, Saitama. The American subsidiary NIKKO CERAMICS, INC. Is founded in New York in 1968 and the brand opens its first commercial showroom there in 1977. Also with a strong presence in Korea and China, the company becomes NIKKO COMPAGNY in 1983.
A first showroom opens in Tokyo in 1995 as the company continues its development.
