MATCHA BOWL FAQ

The matcha bowl: essential for a perfect matcha tea

The chawan (茶碗), also known as a matcha bowl, is a central utensil in the Japanese tea ceremony. Specially designed for preparing matcha tea, this traditional Japanese bowl is distinguished by its wide, flared shape, ideal for whisking the tea with a chasen, the bamboo whisk used in the art of matcha.

What is a chawan?

A chawan is a traditional Japanese bowl used to prepare and enjoy matcha tea. Its cylindrical shape, with a wide diameter and suitable depth, allows matcha to be whisked effectively without splashing. More than a simple vessel, the chawan plays a key role in the sensory experience of matcha: it enhances the aromas, texture, warmth and even the colour of the tea.

What materials are used for a matcha bowl?

The choice of material influences both the feel in the hand, the thermal insulation and the aesthetic of the bowl. Here are the most common options: 1. The ceramic bowl This is the most widely used material for chawans. Japanese ceramic, robust and durable, allows great artistic freedom: varied shapes, textures, glazes and traditional motifs. 2. The porcelain bowl More refined and lightweight, the porcelain chawan captivates with its delicacy and translucency. It offers a smooth texture and understated elegance.

Which bowl should you use for matcha?

Avoid using a ramen bowl, miso soup bowl or rice bowl: these bowls are not suited to preparing matcha. Opt for a chawan specifically designed for this purpose, with: - A wide diameter for whisking the matcha easily without overflow; - A stable base and a good balance in the hand; - A design suited to your preferences, whether understated or artistic. The size of a chawan is generally larger than a standard bowl. This allows the tea to be whisked vigorously without splashing and produces a fine, even foam. The bowl is held in both hands, encouraging a meditative and sensory approach to the tea ritual.

What is the benefit of a matcha bowl?

Beyond its practical function, the chawan participates in the Japanese art of living: it stimulates sight, touch and smell. The quality of the bowl directly influences the enjoyment of matcha and the pleasure of the ritual. Furthermore, the thick walls of the chawan naturally regulate the water temperature, thus preventing the fine green tea powder from being scalded. Our chawans are made in Japan, in keeping with tradition.
