‘Funky Ouma’ is the brainchild of a very funky grandmother of ten who has spent her life having fun with food and spices, but only decided to launch her own brand with her youngest daughter, Johannita Eksteen, at the age of 67.
Funky Ouma offers wonderful farm-fresh salts and spices, rich in aromatic herbs. They use Himalayan salt natural or from Walvis Bay in Namibia. This salt is ideal for cooking, braai (a South African wood-fired meat barbecue served with maize porridge, potato salad, coleslaw and toasted sandwiches), marinades, bread-making or even simply as table salt. It is a tastier, healthier and more natural alternative to your usual salts and spices.
Funky Ouma offers blends enriched with quality herbs grown naturally on the farm, such as rosemary and oregano, as well as other natural ingredients including onion flakes, sweet peppers, dried chillies, lemon zest, exotic black, green and red peppercorns, and coriander.
The production workshop, herb garden and lemon grove are on the farm where the family lives. The best part of their work is that it allows Johannita to be a mum and involve the children in everyday life, to be there when they need her, and lets Ouma be Ouma and have fun with the children between tasks.
Funky Ouma was launched by a dynamic mother-and-daughter duo, Anneke van Rooyen and Johannita Eksteen, on their farm near Paarl. The idea arose many years ago when Anneke’s husband had cancer and they removed all preservatives and colourings from his diet. They experimented with salt and natural flavours and spotted a gap in the market for healthy seasoning blends for cooking and braai. Funky Ouma was founded in 2012 and named after Anneke, who, despite being a mother of four and grandmother of ten, remains funky, on-trend and fully involved in her family and business.
