The development of orchards on two farms, in Nishida District, dates back to 1830. This is the current center of Fukui plum production. In the past two centuries or so, plums have been classified into two different families: "Benisashi" for making umeboshi (candied plums with salt) and "Kensaki" for making umeshu plum wine. These ume are famous in Japan for their tender, fleshy, tasty fruits and their small kernel.
