This mochi is a simple, orthodox mochi, made solely from glutinous rice. Its texture is firm and thick.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eZōni is written in the Japanese language using two kanji characters. As the first means \"various\" or \"mixed\" and the second \"simmer\" or \"boil\", the word is thought to derive from the fact that zōni involves boiling together many different foods (such as mochi, vegetables and seafood). In former times, in samurai society, the dish was called \"烹雑\" (Hōzō), 烹 also being an archaic term for \"simmer\" or \"boil\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eZōni is said to have its roots in the cuisine of samurai society. It is believed to have been a meal cooked during battles in the field, boiled together with mochi, vegetables and dried foods, among other ingredients. It is also generally thought that this original meal, initially exclusive to samurai, eventually became a staple food of the common people. Zōni was first served as part of a full-course dinner (honzen ryōri), and is said to have been a considerably important meal for samurai.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tradition of eating zōni on New Year's Day dates back to the end of the Muromachi period (1336–1573). The dish was offered to the gods during a ceremony on New Year's Eve.
