A signature product of Komatsu Seika, they are part of its “Grandma Series” range.\u003cbr\u003eFor impoverished farmers, sembei made from buckwheat or wheat and cooked over an open hearth or stove were an essential source of food. Even in difficult times, when sweets had all but disappeared, wheat and sesame could still be found somewhere, easing fears of an ingredient shortage. Sembei also play an important role in religious ceremonies and celebrations. At weddings, it was once customary to put mashed red beans on sembei before handing them out to neighbours. The tradition was somewhat like serving modern-day canapés as appetisers.
