Kennyo hishaku have a cup that sits roughly between the furo and ro styles, with a straight-cut handle.

These three types are all of the tsuki-gata type: they are made from two pieces of bamboo that are simply held together by friction. Sashi-toshi hishaku, on the other hand, are made so that the handle passes through the cup and is secured with a pin, making these hishaku far more durable.

It is believed that this is the original style of hishaku and, as such, they are primarily used for more formal temae. The SASHI-TOHSHI version makes no distinction between the brazier and the hearth. The symbolism of the hishaku: The way the water is poured into the kettle, the temperature of the water, and the way the lid is placed on the pot all carry particular significance and are carefully chosen to suit the occasion and the ceremony.
